Musical Geographies: America

Are you an American? Did you vote already? No? What’s wrong with you? Step away from the Internet and go do that right now.

(If you’re not an American, please bear with us while we take care of business.)

Everybody voted? OK then. In honor of Election Day, a/k/a the day we all hold our breath and hope the guy who hates most of the country doesn’t get elected and take away the few rights we’re clinging to, here are some songs about America.

“This Land Is Your Land” – Woody Guthrie

This song kills fascists.

“American Idiot” – Green Day

Life during wartime.

“Born in the U.S.A.” – Bruce Springsteen

I have a really distinct memory of swinging on the swings at a playground near my house at age 5 or 6 proudly singing this song with my best friend. Then I grew up and realized that maybe it wasn’t about what I thought it was about…

“Living in America” – James Brown

Yeah, yeah, war, natural disaster, recession, divisiveness–whatever. Sometimes America just wants to be its funky bad self.

“American Pie” – Don McLean

You didn’t think we were going to get out of this post without this, did you?
